Eveleth Civic Auditorium
The City of Eveleth, Minnesota, completed the restoration of their Civic Auditorium during the spring of 2017. Located at 413 Pierce Street, this theater needed a new painted front curtain to complete their lovely auditorium space. The original 1913 drop was produced by the Twin City Scenic Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota for the opening of the entertainment venue. Unfortunately, it was repainted twice over the century and showed signs of severe deterioration. The Grassi Studios first repainted the composition with a seascape during the 1930s, losing the ornate draperies and tassels. A few decades later, an unknown artist added bright blue waters and a few seagulls. After extensive research and historical consultation, it was decided by the city officials to redesign a new curtain with a 1913 aesthetic. The new backdrop was designed and painted by Wendy Waszut-Barrett and will be installed this fall. It was inspired by the extant designs of John Z. Wood, an employee of the Twin City Scenic Co. during the early twentieth century.
